Women’s Development Federation (WDF) is the largest women organization in Sri Lanka, engaged in poverty alleviation through empowerment of women. It started in 1989 with a few small village level women development societies in Sooriyawewa Divisional Secretariat Division (DS) in Hambantota district with a view to address health and nutrition problems, identified as main causes of poverty. WDF has grown into an organization with 1272 women development societies consisting of more than 70,000 members covering the entire Hambantota district and 5 DS Divisions of southern part of adjoining Moneragala district in the south and south eastern corners of Sri Lanka at its 25th year. In parallel its core service, micro finance operations, has expanded into 158 Janshakthi Bank Societies (JBS) with net assets of about US$ 5.0 million earning a surplus of US $ 0.7 million.

It is a Nongovernmental Organization with a three tier organizational structure starting with small groups at the grass root level and federating them into village societies and a federation at district level allowing the whole membership to participate equally in the decision making process. The WDF has been fortunate to commemorate its 25th anniversary in December 2014 responding very successfully to emerging needs of its members by providing variety of services along with its core micro finance services with diverse products to empower families economically, socially, culturally and politically.
